They believe it takes the Christ out of Christmas, saying it's a modern and disrespectful abbreviation that focuses on the commercialization of this Christian holiday. But some people just don't agree with the spelling of the holiday. Christmas is also known on paper as XMAS. Instead, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it comes from the Latin phrase sacrum legere: "to steal sacred things."8 okt. It looks as though it should be "sac-" plus the word religious, but it isn't. Sacrilegious, an adjective some have applied to the Xmas spelling, is easy to misspell. The "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Christós (Greek: Χριστός), which became Christ in English. It is sometimes pronounced /ˈɛksməs/, but Xmas, and variants such as Xtemass, originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation /ˈkrɪsməs/.
